Jubilation As Ooni Wears "100kg" Aare Crown For First Time
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, put on the sacred Aare crown on Saturday in Ile-Ife, Osun, for the first time amidst jubilations and local gun salute by the natives.
Oba Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, performed the symbolic trip from Ile Oodua, his palace to Oke Mogun shrine, to mark this year’s Olojo Festival, being the first time he would participate in the festival as Ooni.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Olojo Festival holds annually in Ile Ife, to mark creation of the universe and “Aare crown” a special crown made of 151 items.
It is wore only during the celebration of the festival and was adorned by Ooni.
Decked in all white apparel, Oba Ogunwusi, had been in seclusion for 5 days.
He left his residence for Oke Mogun around 4: 30p.m for the final rites before he wore mystic “Aare” crown.
At exactly 5 p.m. Oba Ogunwusi, emerged with Aare crown holding a white dove, amidst prayers and several gunshots which began with the journey to Oke Mogun and Idi Aje.
Two major ports of call during Olojo Festival where rituals and prayers were said for the peace of Nigeria and Yoruba race.
Aare crown, according to sources, in Ooni’s palace weighs 100 kg, last made the trip to Oke Mogun several years ago.
“Because the late Ooni, Oba Okunade Sijuade, owing to his advance age in last 3 years of his reign did not wear Aare crown even during the celebration of Olojo.
On the procession of Ooni to Oke Mogun were Ife chiefs, priests and members of Oodua People’s Congress, OPC, as well as indigenes and tourists from different parts of world.
Before Ooni commenced the trip, his messengers, who wore only shorts, wielding cane performed the symbolic sprint to Oke Mogun three times to clear the route the monarch would take.
NAN reports that the festival was peaceful, as all and sundry were in celebration mood, praying for the progress and development of the Yoruba race and the country at large. (NAN)
Group Applauds Aisha, Says President's Wife Spoke For Nigerians
A research-based group, the Centre for African Resources, Research and Development (CARRD) has expressed solidarity with Mrs Aisha Buhari, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari over the recent interview she granted with the BBC Hausa Services in Abuja.
In a statement signed by the Group's Chairman, Dr Ismail Ibraheem, CARRD said it nonetheless disagreed with "the attendant global political and gender-tilted reverberations-between President Muhammadu Buhari and his wife, Mrs Aisha Buhari" over the development.
The group further expressed dismay over President Buhari's response to his wife's complaint when responding to a reporter's question at his official visit to Germany.
"Right in the face of global and Nigerian media, President Buhari said his wife belongs to the 'kitchen, the living room, and the ‘other’ room'," a part of the statement read. "This was a retort to an interview Mrs Buhari granted the BBC Hausa Service, in which she chided her husband for allowing 'strange' people into his cabinet and inner circle; people she accused of hijacking and destabilizing his administration, and incurring the wrath of millions of his loyalist-voters on his behalf. She also threatened not to campaign for him like she did in 2015, should he decide to seek re-election in 2019."
The group also stated that it shares the sentiments expressed by Mrs Buhari.
"While we agree that the President has the inalienable right to respond to whatever comments his wife makes, within and without the 'kitchen and other rooms’, we disagree with him over his choice of words, and the global and political environment where he said them.
"President Buhari made those comments - which millions within and without Nigeria have interpreted to be misogynist, sexist and 'Trump-like' - beside arguably the most powerful woman in the world, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, to diplomatically-veiled consternation from her. CARRD is tempted to ask what the President and his team are doing seeking economic, security and political assistance from a country whose leader is also supposed to 'belong to the kitchen et al'," the statement read.
CARRD also reminded President Buhari "that his now 'kitchen-belonging wife' was of inestimable political help to him and his party during the 2015 elections, mobilizing millions of women’s votes for them, and defending her husband from misogynist and sexist accusations from the now-opposition."
"Indeed, Aisha Buhari’s cries of strange bed fellows in President Buhari’s inner circle and cabinet may not be far from the truth, with claims already in the public domain of the right officials and appointees being side-lin

HON WEST IDAHOSA quits partisan politics. His words
I did not witness the election and would not know whether it was rigged or not . But to say that we should do the same thing over & over again is to stand still while the world moves on. Assuming without conceding that one rigging should replace another, when would it end. Why don't we forget democracy and fashion out another mode of selecting leadership instead of wasting tax payers money to conduct every election and when they are questioned, we simply proclaim; this was the way our forefathers did it, so let's continue . These are my non- partisan thoughts.
NB. Please note that I have now quit partisan politics. Formal announcement to follow soon. Happy Sunday.
Dr. West-Idahosa.
